Lilienthal Carbon MTB Rims

Lilienthal develops, designs and manufactures carbon mountain bike rims exclusively in Braunschweig, Germany

Originally, Arne Stahl and Henrik Borgwardt developed the process at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to make aircraft manufacturing faster, more efficient and environmentally friendly. The great interest shown by the aerospace industry encouraged the two founders to implement the idea in their own company.

Through a contact in the bicycle industry the idea came up to use this automated manufacturing technology and the aerospace carbon material from the aviation industry to produce carbon rims in Germany.

COPRO has designed and engineered four different rim variants under the Lilienthal.bike brand: from the 485g Lilientahl XE for e-bikes with foam core, to the lightweight Lilienthal XC for down country, to the 330g lightweight Lilienthal XS for use in MTB marathons

All products are offered in 29" and 27.5" with a lifetime warranty and a crash replacement policy.

Lilienthal rims are made from a carbon fiber used in aviation (NCF material). The fiber fabrics consist of parallel carbon fiber cords, giving the rims high strength and stiffness using less material (which means less waste). The wheels are cured using a process called resin transfer molding (RTM), which involves creating a vacuum inside the heated mold while injecting resin to draw the resin into the carbon layers. Each wheel is cured in the mold before it is removed, then it undergoes quality control testing and has hub-specific spoke holes drilled by an automated machine.
